YEAR TWO
Curriculum
Spring Term English:
This term will be using a wide range of non-fiction texts to support our learning about Africa. From this we will write non-chronological reports, a holiday brochure and instructions on ‘How to care for a wild beast’. We will also delve in stories with an African theme, including traditional African tales, to support our narrative work – newspaper reports, retells and job advertisements. Alongside these genres, we will continue to focus on sentence development and the application of phonic skills in writing, which will extend to learning spelling rules and patterns.
Spring Term Maths:
.As in the Autumn term, maths sessions will continue to be delivered through a mastery approach, which involves children developing mathematical understanding by engaging practically with number and using pictorial representations alongside abstract symbols. This term children will revisit and consolidate their understanding of place value with 2-digit numbers and further develop their strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems including in the context of money. There will be a focus on multiplication and division, fractions, shape, measurement and statistics.
Spring Term Science: Habitats
This term in our topic on Habitats, we will learn about different types of habitats and the plants and animals that live in them. The children will explore how living things are suited to their environments, including local habitats such as gardens and woodlands, as well as more contrasting habitats like deserts and oceans. They will learn that animals and plants depend on each other for food and shelter and will begin to understand simple food chains. Through practical activities, discussion and observation, our mini investigators will develop their scientific skills while building an appreciation of the natural world around them.
Spring Term Geography: Amazing Africa
In our Amazing Africa topic, the children will use their geographical skills to explore the continent of Africa. They will learn to locate Africa on a world map and globe, identify some of its countries, and compare it to the UK. They will discover key physical and human features, including deserts, animals, climates and ways of life. They will also will use maps, photographs and simple data to support their learning.
