Year 2

Jackie Morris is a British writer and illustrator who was born in Birmingham in 1961.

Her descriptions imagine each child’s relationship with their own dragon. Here are dragons that can curl around an ear, sing and laugh. Some are as big as a village or as long as a river. Dragons of every colour live in the city, the countryside or under the sea, delighting in water, fire or ice.

Curriculum

Summer Term English:

This term will be using a wide range of fictional and non-fiction texts to support our learning

about Castles and Dragons. From this we will write; non-chronological reports about castles, fictional

stories about dragons and other mythical creatures, instructions on ‘How to tame a wild dragon and

descriptive poetry using our senses. Alongside these genres, we will continue to focus on sentence

development and the application of phonic skills and spelling rules and patterns. Linking sentences to

compose longer pieces of narrative will be a focus for the term.

Summer Term Maths:

As in the previous terms, maths sessions will continue to be delivered through a mastery

approach, which involves children developing mathematical understanding by engaging practically with

number and using pictorial representations alongside abstract symbols. This term children will revisit and

consolidate their understanding of multiplications and division and further develop their strategies to solve

addition and subtraction problems including in the context of measures. There will be a new focus on

fractions, shape and statistics.

Summer Term Science: Living Things

This term, our super scientists will explore the fascinating world of living things. Through hands-on investigations, they will develop an understanding of what makes something alive, the basic needs of plants and animals, and how living things grow and change over time. They will observe the life cycles of different creatures, explore habitats, and consider how living things depend on each other to survive. Using scientific enquiry skills, they will ask questions, make predictions, and record their findings to deepen their understanding of the natural world.

Summer Term History: Castles and the Battle of Hastings

This term, our amazing archaeologists will step back in time to explore the world of castles and the dramatic events of the Battle of Hastings. They will investigate the features of castles, their purpose, and how they changed over time. They will discover the lives of the people who lived in and defended these mighty structures. Through storytelling and historical enquiry, they will learn about the famous battle of 1066, why it happened, and its lasting impact on Britain. Using maps and primary sources, they will deepen their understanding of how history shapes the world around them.
