Guess what, Year 1? Our new class book is ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ by David and Rhonda Armitage
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch is a story about a very busy lighthouse keeper called Mr Grinling, his wife, Mrs Grinling and their ginger cat called Hamish. Mrs Grinling makes a delicious lunch for Mr Grinling every day, but it it is stolen by three scavenging seaguls. They must hatch a plan to stop those pesky seagulls from stealing the lunch!

Year 1
Welcome to the Year 1 class page! Our team are Mrs McGhie, Mrs Turner, Miss Smith and Mrs Green
- Homework: Try to do all of the tasks each half-term, but not all at once 😉 Spread it out over the weeks.
- PE Days: PE Kit on Thursdays and Fridays
Remember to read at least 3 times a week and record in diaries.
YEAR ONE
Curriculum
Summer Term English:
We will be continuing to work on our sentences, making sure we have put capital letters and full stops in them. We will also be using exclamation marks and question marks. We will be checking for finger spaces and correctly formed letters. As well as this, we will be adding adjectives to our sentences to make them more interesting and using and to make our sentences longer. We will also be using our knowledge of phonics to help with spellings and spelling common words independently. We will be writing poems about the seaside.
Our main text will be The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and we will be writing all about Mr Grinling and his crazy antics! We will also be looking at various non-fiction books about the seaside.
We will be following the Little Wandle phonics scheme. Children will have guided reading sessions matched to their phonics level at least three times a week and then bring this book home to practice at the end of the week. The Year 1 Phonics Check will be the week commencing Monday 8th June 2026
Summer Term Maths:
In Maths we will be working on making sure we have all the concepts we need ready for Year 2. This will include working on, number and place value, addition and subtraction, shapes and patterns, measures (including time), fractions, multiplication and division, position and movement and doubles up to 10.
Summer Term Science:
In Science we will be continuing our work on the seasons and be looking fo signs of Summer. We will also be working on the topic ‘Animals including humans’ and be thinking about parts of our bodies and how humans and animals grow up healthily, as well as classifying animals into different groups.
Summer Term Geography/History:
As our topic is all about the seaside,we will be researching features of the seaside and looking at human and physical features. We will be learning about the four points of the compass and we will also compare and contrast the seaside to our environment.
As part of our Topic we will be thinking about what the seaside was like in the past.
