Chester Zoo Sustainable Palm Oil Project
Sustainable Choices at Chester Zoo
As part of our whole-school visit to Chester Zoo, pupils from Years 1 to 6 explored not only the incredible animals and habitats but also learned about the vital role we can all play in protecting our planet. A key focus was the zoo’s campaign for sustainable palm oil.
Children discovered how unsustainable palm oil production threatens rainforests and the species that live there including orangutans and tigers. During an engaging workshop, pupils took on the role of hornbills, using clay to seal up a nest entrance just as the birds do in the wild to protect their young. It was a powerful link to the importance of safe habitats.
This message tied in closely with our ongoing work at Nantwich Primary Academy around sustainability, responsible consumer choices and protecting biodiversity. Pupils returned inspired to look at packaging more carefully and share their knowledge at home.
The trip deepened our commitment to educating children about global environmental issues in a way that is age-appropriate, meaningful and action-focused. We are proud to stand alongside Chester Zoo as a Sustainable Palm Oil School and will continue to weave these important messages through our curriculum and school culture.

St Bart's Super Gang!
Solar Panels at NPA

“Our newly installed solar panels generate clean, renewable energy for our school, reducing carbon emissions by 2.2 tonnes annually—the equivalent of planting 70 trees each year. This initiative saves money while helping protect the planet for future generations.”
Making A Difference

At Nantwich Primary Academy, we are committed to reducing the use of plastics. One of the steps we’ve taken is minimising the amount of laminating we do, ensuring we use only what is absolutely necessary. By making this change, we aim to reduce our environmental impact and encourage more sustainable practices across our school.
At Nantwich Primary Academy, we are committed to fostering a culture of sustainability, ensuring that our school contributes positively to protecting our environment. Sustainability is an important part of our ethos, and we are continually working to improve our practices to benefit future generations.
How We Are Sustainable
- Energy Efficiency
- We keep radiators on low settings to reduce energy usage while maintaining a comfortable learning environment.
- Lights are switched off in classrooms and other areas when not in use, helping us to save electricity.
- Renewable Energy
- In 2025, we installed solar panels to generate renewable energy for the school, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.
- Recycling and Reusing
- We make every effort to minimise waste by reusing scrap paper for activities and projects before recycling it.
- We run a uniform shop as part of our community events, encouraging families to recycle school uniforms and reduce the need for new purchases.
- Educating for Sustainability
- We teach our pupils about the importance of protecting the environment through lessons, projects, and school-wide initiatives.
- Children are encouraged to develop good habits, such as turning off taps and sorting waste into recycling bins.
Collaboration with St. Bart’s Multi-Academy Trust
As part of St. Bart’s Multi-Academy Trust, we align with and are supported by the Trust’s comprehensive sustainability objectives. SBMAT has appointed a sustainability manager to lead the development and implementation of a robust sustainability strategy across all its academies.
This strategy focuses on key areas such as managing carbon emissions, enhancing building energy efficiency, promoting sustainable travel, improving water management, reducing waste, and integrating sustainability into the curriculum.
By working closely with SBMAT, we benefit from shared resources, expertise, and initiatives that enhance our sustainability efforts.
Community Involvement
We believe sustainability is a shared responsibility. By involving parents and the wider community in our sustainability efforts, we are working together to create a more environmentally friendly future.
