Cultural Capital

At Nantwich Primary Academy, we promote French language study for personal development and global society. Our MFL curriculum aims to foster an interest in languages and their cultures while building essential skills and cultural capital.

Our aims are:

Enable children to understand and communicate in another language.
Develop enthusiasm and skills for language learning.
Increase global awareness and cultural understanding.
Encourage tolerance and cooperation.

We ensure access to quality MFL teaching through St Bart’s Trust’s resources, Language Angels, and materials from Rachel Hawkes. Our French curriculum is enjoyable to teach and learn, starting earlier than the National Curriculum’s Year 3 requirement.

KS1 children practice French through daily greetings and instructions. Lessons in KS2 progressively develop French skills with weekly classes delivered by qualified teachers. Lessons are fun and educational, using interactive resources for speaking, listening, and engaging activities.

At Nantwich Primary Academy, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) programme aims to provide students with a strong foundation in French language skills and cultural understanding. Utilising the Language Angels scheme of work, we align our curriculum with the National Curriculum for MFL, focusing on fostering linguistic competence, intercultural awareness, and enthusiasm for language learning.

Key Stage 1: In Key Stage 1, students are introduced to French through a variety of engaging and age-appropriate activities. They develop basic communication skills, learning to understand and use simple phrases and vocabulary related to everyday life. Students are also exposed to French culture through stories, songs, and celebrations.

Key Stage 2: Building upon the foundation established in Key Stage 1, our Key Stage 2 French programme delves deeper into language skills and cultural knowledge. Students further develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities by exploring a range of topics, such as family, hobbies, food, and travel. They also learn about essential grammar concepts and improve their pronunciation.

Throughout their MFL journey at Nantwich Primary Academy, students participate in interactive and collaborative activities designed to boost their language confidence and promote a positive attitude towards language learning. Our goal is to equip students with the skills and enthusiasm necessary for successful language acquisition, preparing them for further language study and a greater appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity.

ENGLISH

Pupils can delve into French literature and poetry, comparing styles, themes, and linguistic structures. They can also practise translation skills between French and English, reinforcing their understanding of both languages.

HISTORY

Studying historical events and figures from French-speaking countries allows pupils to deepen their understanding of the cultural context and develop their language skills by learning historical terms and expressions.

GEOGRAPHY

Pupils can research and present information about French-speaking countries, exploring their landscapes, climate, and natural resources whilst learning relevant vocabulary and expressions in French.

ART & DESIGN

Students can study and discuss famous French artists and artistic movements, describing artworks and styles in French, as well as creating their own art inspired by French techniques.

MUSIC

Pupils can learn about French music styles, composers, and musicians, and sing French songs or create their own compositions with French lyrics.

MATHEMATICS

Pupils can practise solving maths problems in French, reinforcing the use of numbers, mathematical terms, and problem-solving language.

DRAMA

Role-playing activities in French allow pupils to develop their speaking, listening, and acting skills, as well as promoting cultural understanding.

Students can discuss social and cultural issues in French-speaking countries and communities, fostering empathy, understanding, and language development.
