Uses am and pm

The numbers 1 to 12 repeat twice each day. am runs from midnight to before noon; pm runs from noon to before midnight.

24-hour clock

Each hour has its own number

The day runs from 00:00 to 23:59. There is no am or pm — and we always use four digits.

7:35 pm → 19:35

AM times

Keep the hour

For most morning times, the hour stays the same. Add a zero at the front when needed.

7:20 am → 07:20

PM times

Add 12

For times after 12 noon, add 12 to the hour. The minutes never change.

4:45 pm → 16:45

Watch out!

Midnight and noon

These are special. Midnight starts at 00, but noon stays at 12.

12 am → 00
12 pm → 12

Reverse the rule for a 24-hour pm timeWhen the hour is 13 or more, subtract 12 and add pm: 18:10 → 6:10 pm.
